DSLRs are versatile device and ideal for shooting day to day scenarios, portraits, wildlife, landscapes, architecture and even low light photography. This is driven by the ability to change most settings, lenses and produce great shots in a wide variety of scenarios from the same camera.
Brief notes about different types of cameras in the market today.
DSLRs

These are highly versatile and most suited for almost all types of photography in varying conditions.it is flexible due to huge range of lenses and functionality. It have excellent picture quality. It is bulky and may need space considering that you may carry lenses and tripod separately. Ideal for professional and semi pro and beginners.
Mirrorless cameras

Similar performance and versatility and capability compared to a DSLR. It is also flexible as it have new lens options but may be limited compared to DSLRs. Picture quality is excellent. It is lighter and more portable compared to DSLR.
Action cameras

Best suited for shooting videos and fast motion situations like sports, under water swimming and action sequences. It is not flexible due to no interchangeable lens available. Good for video recording and is not ideal for static photography. It is really compact and highly portable.
Point and Shoot / Digital cameras

It have limited functionality and have much smaller sensor size compared.it is not flexible due to no interchangeability of lenses. Picture quality is average with limited zoom options or modes. It is compact and easy to carry. Ideal for families.
Phone cameras

Ideal for every day shooting and instantly sharable, not flexible, picture quality is average due to smaller sensor, light and easiest to carry around and ideal for everyone.
